Indoor Cup and Plate Competition Report 26th February 2012

Written by Arthur Atkins

There were only 2 matches this week in the KCB Shepway 6-a-side Plate competition as Saltwood (against Stowting) and Etchinghill (against Hawkinge) were unable to raise a team. As a result Stowting played Hawkinge in the semi-final. This resulted in the first “giant-killing of the season when Div 1 runners-up Hawkinge lost to Division 2 runeers-up Stowting.

Hawkinge batted first and were pegged back by tight Stowting bowling and injudicious shots from the batsmen to finish on 81 all out. Shahid Rajput (28) and Joe Payne (21) were the only batsmen to prosper whilst John Hill took 2-30 and Dan Bland with a very meagre spell of 1-10 did most of the damage with the ball, although Craig Harding and Mark Jackson only conceded 18 in their 3 overs. Stowting had a good start to their innings with Mark Jackson (24) and Dan Bland (23) putting on 55 for the first wicket before there was a stutter when 3 wickets fell for the addition of 1 run. However Craig Harding and Steve Jackson steadied the ship and took Stowting through to the final with 5 balls to spare.

The second match of the afternoon was a very low scoring affair when Mersham-le-Hatch only managed 50-5 off their 12 overs against Westbourne with all 5 bowlers tying the batsmen down, Lewis Caruana being the pick with 2-12. Westbourne took their time and reached their target in the 10th over with Neil Carter scoring 23 and Dave Clipstone 16. Jeremy Godden took 2 wickets with successive balls to finish on 2-5.

Results

Hawkinge 81 all out (S Rajput 28, J Payne 21, J Hill 2-30) lost to Stowting 82-3 (M jackson 24, D Bland 23) by 3 wickets.

Mersham-le-Hatch 50-5 (L Caruana 2-12) lost to Westbourne 51-2 (N Castle 23 no, D Clipstone 16, Je Godden 2-5) by 4 wickets.
